Malvern shows latest imaging solutions at AAPS

Malvern InstrumentsVisitors to Malvern Instruments booth (#1647) at next week's AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition will have an early opportunity to discover the benefits of integrating the automated size/shape analysis of particles with the chemical identification provided by Raman spectroscopy, using Malvern's Morphologi G3-ID system. Also key among Malvern's exhibits for pharmaceutical scientists is the Viscotek TDAmax, a powerful gel permeation/size exclusion chromatography (GPC/SEC) system, which is one of a range of polymer/protein characterization solutions from the company.

Automated size/shape analysis

Applications for the Morphologi G3-ID include the characterization of inhaled formulations, where it provides a perfect complement to Malvern's Spraytec system. With nasal sprays for example, deposition relates to the delivered droplet size while bioavailability depends on factors which include the size distribution of the API. Laser diffraction analysis using Malvern's Spraytec system enables the monitoring of changes in droplet size while analysis with the Morphologi G3-ID permits the detection of even subtle changes in API size distribution. Similarly with dry powder inhalers, techniques which can follow the process of particle dispersion, and then identify which species have been dispersed to a respirable particle size, can offer significant benefits, especially when developing new combination therapies.

Protein/polymer characterization

When it comes to protein and polymer characterization, Malvern's Viscotek TDAmax GPC/SEC system measures absolute molecular weight without correction or extrapolation, molecular size (Rh to less than 1 nm and Rg) and intrinsic viscosity. Its unique triple detector array features a revolutionary low angle light scattering detector, four capillary differential viscometer and differential refractive index detector. An optional UV or PDA (photodiode array) detector can be added to give valuable compositional information.
