UPS, FedEx and DHL Tell PETA US They Will Not Participate in an Industry That Harms and Kills Animals in Tests

Three of the world's largest cargo carriers have taken a stand against transporting animals to laboratories for experiments. Following discussions with PETA US, UPS has won high praise for adopting a worldwide ban on transporting laboratory-bound animals, and FedEx and DHL have confirmed to PETA US that they prohibit this cruel practice.

"UPS, FedEx and DHL are in synch with public opinion by rejecting shipments of animals to laboratories, where they would be poisoned, dissected, infected and killed", says PETA UK Policy Advisor Alistair Currie. "PETA UK and its international affiliates will continue to press the few remaining airlines that still profit from the suffering of animals to end their participation in this shameful practice."

Nearly every major airline in the world has a policy against transporting primates slated for experimentation, which has been the focus of campaigns by PETA UK and its international affiliates. A shrinking group of airlines – including Air France, China Eastern Airlines, United Airlines subsidiary Continental Cargo, Philippine Airlines and Vietnam Airlines – continue to transport tens of thousands of primates from Asia and Africa to US laboratories, where they are caged, tormented in painful experiments and then killed. Last month, following a PETA US campaign, Air China announced that it would no longer ship primates to laboratories.

Some of these primates are bred in captivity on cramped, squalid monkey farms, whereas others are torn away from their families in the wild. The traumatised animals are crammed into small wooden crates and transported in the dark and terrifying cargo holds of planes, often on passenger flights just below unsuspecting customers.
