New Virtual Powder Flow Course happening in February 2023 focusing on the properties of powders!

Understanding the flow of powders is essential in many industrial applications. Anyone working with powdered materials has once experienced processability problems like a lack of flowability, heavy sticking on pipes and machine surfaces, or variability in dosage among many other examples.

The macroscopic behavior of powders is a direct consequence of the diverse microscopic interactions taking place at the scale of the particles. Therefore, the flow of powders is the result of a complex multiparameter interplay of these interactions. However, a good understanding of the properties of the particles and the cohesive interactions is necessary to better predict the resulting behavior, as well as its sensibility to environmental parameters like relative humidity or process temperature.

In this Virtual Powder Flow Course, we will explore the properties of powders at different scales, from the interactions between the particles at the micro scale to the consequence on the powder processability. The course aims to provide the required fundamental background on the physics of powders. Then, the participants will learn how this new knowledge can be used to better understand the processability of powders through detailed case studies.

Program

Day 1 - 27 FEBRUARY: Fundamentals

15:00 - Welcome

15:15 - Interactions between the grains

In this first lecture, the forces playing a role inside a powder are listed and their effects on the bulk properties are discussed. A deep knowledge of the forces acting between the grains and the parameters influencing these forces helps to understand the behavior of powders and granular materials in an industrial production plant.

16:15 - Break

16:30 - Macroscopic behaviors of powders and granular materials

In this second lecture, the macroscopic properties of a granular pile are discussed. We start with the packing fraction, which is the main physical characteristic of an assembly of grains. Afterward, the flowing properties of both cohesive and non-cohesive powders are discussed. Finally, we discuss the combined effect of humidity, temperature, and electrostatic charges on powder flow.

17:30 - Q&A and Conclusions

Day 2 - 28 FEBRUARY: Applications

15:00 - Welcome

15:15 - How To Measure Powder Flow?

In the third lecture, participants will be introduced to the different methods available to characterize powder behaviors. We will show how the information gathered for these methods can be combined to draw a complete picture of the powder properties. The importance of choosing the right method depending on the stress state and flow field at which the powder is submitted will be highlighted.

16:00 - Break

16:15 - Correlation with industrial cases

In this last presentation, the participants will dive into practical applications. A broad range of industries will be covered such as pharmaceuticals, additive manufacturing, or food packaging, to cite a few. We will highlight the importance of measuring the powder properties and how these properties can be related to industrial process optimization (tableting, recoating, packaging, etc).

17:30 - Q&A and Conclusions
